James Atkins Papers, . 1874-1931

James Atkins (1850-1923) was a clergyman of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South; the bishop of North Carolina; the president of Asheville Female College, 1879-1889; and the president of Emory and Henry College, 1893-1896. The collection includes family and professional correspondence of Atkins; and family and business papers, 1923-1931, of his son, James Atkins, Jr., a real estate broker of Waynesville, N.C. Also included is material relating to Haywood County, N.C., schools, Asheville Female College, Emory and Henry College, Methodist churches in the South, and home and foreign missions. Volumes include miscellaneous records of the two colleges and brief diaries, 1891, 1895, and undated.
